DescriptionAs I’ve mentioned in past posts, I’m fond of the DC War Comics. For a hobby so closely tied to nostalgia, war comics are about as nostalgic as it gets for me. My grandfather would read western and war comics, and there was always a stack in his apartment in Budlong Woods on the North Side of Chicago. He maintained it was to help his English, I just think he liked comics. To me, the war comics always were a touch more exciting than most other books because even though I was pretty sure Rock was coming back for the next issue, everyone else seemed to be at risk. For a while, I think the life expectancy of a new character in a book with Sgt Rock could not have been any greater than anyone wearing a red shirt on an away team mission in “Star Trek”.

I agree. There was some great work done in DC's war books. I didn't buy them at the time; I read my friends copies, but I always enjoyed them art and story. Congrats on this pickup.

I have never commented on a war cover before, but this is certainly deserving of a comment! Great cover my friend. I love the facial expressions.

It's official - you are becoming my #1 source of comic history information. This one is beautiful - and it is made even more so by your description of this amazing piece of comic history. As always, congrats on a great addition to your collection.

Kubert's art is really powerful and dramatic and those adjectives definitely apply to this cover. It is also interesting to note editor/writer Bob Kanigher's success at bringing this kind of subject matter to the stands in 1965 and to compare it to the story of the rejected Teen Titans #20 issue which would have come out about three years later (the reported differences in the plots being duly noted).

A masterpiece. One of my all-time favorite Kubert covers.
