Description

This one's still basically a work in progress, my big watercolor debut, trying my best to imitate my two biggest influences in watercolor, Lynn Varley, know to me pretty much only for her collaborations with Frank Filler on projects like 300 and the dark knight returns, and the wonderful, anonymous background painters for the rankin bass cartoons, whose cold, bleak palette never fails to depress.
I've become extremely interested in the conquistadors recently (i've got an unfinished picture of Cortes landing in the yucatan still in the works) for me they represent the best and the worst traits of western civilization simultaneously. I wanted to depict Pizarro at the founding of Lima, caught in an introspective pause before raising his sword in triumph (there is a painting which depicts just that, complete the crucifix, armor and giant holy roman empire flag) i wanted him to evoke the great old warlord from Kurosawa's "Ran" a man weighed down by the memory of both his victories and his crimes.
