Description

"Heartbreak Soup" was the first Palomar story. It appeared on issue 3 of the original L&R series published by Fantagraphics, in 1983, and was reprinted later in the first of the 15 paperbacks collecting the whole first run of the series. I had the chance to read it only 10 years later, when those volumes were published in Italy.

I love mainstream Marvel/DC comics, I mean, I am a fan: but independent comics pages like the L&R ones, have a really special taste. They shows all the power of the simple art of comics, to fully express the vision of a young artist, abiding only to his own rules, building his own world, with just a pencil and inks. It's such a simple trick � but almost magical, in his own fashion.

This is the "Welcome to Palomar" Carmen page, where the terrible kid delivers her immortal line about men/women relationships. That fourth panel marks probably the moment when I fell in love with this story and characters. It was a surprise to find on the original page the legenda on the bottom of the page (because it's not present in the italian edition). It's funny to think about the young artist, trying to explain to his english speaking audience how to spell the characters names... "Aw-goose-teen"... that really makes me laugh!
