Erwin Sels, who uses the pseudonym Ersel, was born in Antwerp in Belgium as the son of comic artist Frank Sels. He became a comic artist himself, specializing in realistic design. He started his career in comics in 1989, and he published 'Frenchy', 'Brugge de Stille', 'Indochine' and 'De Laatste der Mohikanen' under his own name. He took over the art on the series 'Les Pioniers du Nouveau Monde' from Jean-François Charles. He followed it up with 'Claymore' and two series of 'Vécu', written by Ruellan. Also with Ruellan, he launched 'Les Derniers Jours de la Géhenne'. Ersel teamed up with Ferry van Vosselen on the series 'Le Gardien de la Lance', published by Glénat.
