Description

Those of you that know me know that I love me some obscure heroes. I also love me some Timely heroes -- and when they're both Timely heroes AND obscure, well brother, let me at 'em. Actually, other than Captain America, Namor, and the original Human Torch, most Timely heroes are pretty much obscure -- and you can't get much more obscure than these four guys rendered here.

Before there was Dr. Strange, Timely had quite a few mystic sorceror types. They all pretty much came and went without a trace. Still, that doesn't mean they couldn't have been bigger than they were, if only had showed them a little TLC. Unfortunately, most of them haven't appeared in a comic in over 50 years. Poor babies -- come to Papa!

Allow me to introduce you to these forgotten heroes of yesteryear (from left to right)

MANTOR THE MAGICIAN -- This fez-wearing master of the mystic arts appeared in one story and one story only -- as a back-up feature in HUMAN TORCH COMICS #4 (September 1940). Hasn't been seen SINCE -- not even in a CAF commission, til now. That's over 61 years in comics limbo. He's way overdue for a comeback, Marvel.

MERZAH THE MYSTIC -- Debuting in MYSTIC COMICS #1 (August 1940), the Merz appeared in just a handful of appearances and hadn't been seen for over half a century until 2011 when he appeared in the BAND OF HEROES limited series. His powers of telepathy and maybe precognition made him potentially a very interesting character, but alas his series didn't last long. I'm lobbying to bring him back too.

DAKOR THE MAGICIAN -- Dakor was almost kind of a mystic merc -- that is, he got PAID to take cases, and he DID NOT come cheap! He looked like he enjoyed a lavish lifestyle as well. You want the Dakman? You better make it rain. Filet mignon doesn't pay for itself.

MONAKO, PRINCE OF MAGIC -- Okay, Monako was sort of a Harry Blackstone wannabe, who was popular at the time. He didn't last long though. You can barely even find him on Google. That, despite the fact that I've got a solo commission of him right here in my gallery. Looks like I've got work to do.

This gorgeous commission is the work of the one and only YVEL GUICHET. Yvel, who among his other work had a great and distinguished run on AQUAMAN, just really blew this one away. These characters have never looked better. You can contact Yvel through his very own CAF gallery as well as at his website, yvelguichetarts.com

Thanks Yvel for a beautiful piece of artwork. You work magic with a pencil.

I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but... it's magic! Congratulations, Damon, on yet another historically revelatory (say that five times fast) wonderwork!

Alakazam; I've held off on posting because I think the talented Mr. Owens has done it again and come up with the DEFINITIVE commission of the Timely Magicians...I love this piece - c'mon Marvel, I see a mini-series....

Why would anyone devote commission money to a bunch of obscure characters? Oh, wait. Nevermind, that is cool (especially the fez - you don't see enough fezzes these days).
