Description

"City at World's End", by Edmond Hamilton, is one of my favorite novels. It's a science fiction story about the residents of a small city who are trying to figure out how they survived a surprise nuclear attack and more importantly, why the world around them has changed so drastically. While well written, it was originally published in the 1950's and is obviously dated and not for everyone's tastes.

Twenty some odd years ago, John began working on an adaptation of "City at World's End". He was doing the adaptation for free and it was something that he tried to fit in around his day job. Unfortunately, John never found the time to do as many pages as he wanted to over the allotted time span and the project went unfinished.

This is the original art for page two and it shows one of the main characters of the story, a scientist named Kenniston, peacefully walking down the street, on his way to work, just seconds before the bomb explodes. I like the subtle detail that John put into the first panel, from the woman on the left buying fruit, to the man on the right with the newspaper. The other panel is a Xerox of a nuclear explosion that John did some re-working on.

I can't believe I haven't commented, seeing how I've bothered Jim Warden for years about there being any other pages from this never finished adaptation. Over on the Byrne Forum I suggested to JB that Jon Hamm should play Kenniston in the movie, were it ever to happen, congrats!
