DescriptionIt started with a B&W pin-up I had purchased from Herb Trimpe at my 2010 Cherry Blossom Spectacular. I had always wanted a nice Hulk vs. Wolverine pin-up from Herb and this was "the one."But, I always thought it could be something more with a nice background and color added! So, I commissioned the world's most famous Canadian comic book background artist to draw a background of the Canadian Rockies for the battle betweeen the world's most famous Canadian superhero against the green-skinned Hulk. Gerhard really wanted to draw an actual Wolverine in the background and then he just kept adding other Canadian wildlife creatures as onlookers to the battle (nice way of infusing a little humor into the piece). Gerhard even created a music video showing his technique on how he colored this piece (what a bonus). Check out the history of this piece on Gerhard's blog at http://www.gerhardart.com/apps/blog. I think it turned out great and wanted to thank Herb and Gerhard for contributing to what has become a special piece in my collection. It may have been an unlikely pairing, but the end-result was something fantastic! Update as of Jan. 1, 2013 - Michael Eury at Back Issue Magazine decided to use this piece as the cover to Back Issue #70. Look for it in early 2014, but I've added a preview in the auxiliary images section. Update as of April 15, 2015 - With Herb's recent passing, I just wanted to say that I'll always remember him through this wonderful piece. He was a true talent and a friend. RIP. Social/Sharing |

Absolutely stunning. It has a very 3-D feel about it.

Quite right, an unlikely pairing, and it does work - really well, too! Well done on getting two creators to collaborate on an absolutely unique and very cool piece!

Simple commission, turned to masterpiece, turned to published cover. Only you can pull this off.

The art is taken from my original Superman vs Hulk commission that Herb did for me back in 2003. All that has been done is the didigerdoo that the Hulk was holding has been erased and Superman is now Wolverine. But yes, I own the proper, original art to that.

Charles, this is such an amazing illustration. Herb Trimpe really was a wonderful artist. And your idea to have Gerhard illustrate the background was brilliant. This was the perfect cover image for Back Issue #70.

I hope and pray that when he left us, Herb knew just how much he meant to this industry. Incredible piece and incredible story.
