The dawn of the comic book industry produced many a strange and quirky character. Many of them came and went without a trace. Some were actually around for years. This strange hero belongs to the former category.
But rather than tell you about him myself, let me instead let the good people of herogoggles.com do the talking. This was cut-and-pasted from their website:
Speed Centaur: 1939, Amazing Mystery Funnies #12 (Centaur). Speed Centaur is the sole survivor of a race of centaurs that lived in the Arctic after an earthquake destroys their civilization. Speed is discovered by ace reporter "Reel" McCoy of the Daily Views who brings him to America. Speed is strong, fast and able to fly (the last not being one you'd naturally expect from a centaur) and he puts those talents to use fighting evil.
Me again: Yep, that's right, a crime-fighting centaur -- and considering that he could fly, you definitely didn't want to get on his bad side after he's had a big lunch. Still, an intriguing character with possibilities. Maybe with all the public domain characters being revived in recent years, we'll see him one day again. Or not.
Speed Centaur has never looked better, and that's because he's penciled here by the incredible Scott McDaniel. That's right, the same guy that drew DAREDEVIL, DETECTIVE COMICS, NIGHTWING, RICHARD DRAGON, THE GREAT TEN, etc. did a beautiful job rendering the half-horse hero.
