Description

This strip shows the second time Skeezix attempts to walk -- he had first gotten up and taken a step two daily strips earlier, although he immediately fell back down after that first attempt. I believe it could fairly be said, however, that this strip represents the first time Skeezix went up on his two legs and stayed up, never again having to crawl to get around. It also is the first time that King had Skeezix walking and talking in the same daily strip. Walt's little boy was growing up, and he had only been found a year and 6 days earlier. Of course, it's also pretty obvious that the humor in this strip comes from the fact that Skeezix more or less swears for the first time, even though King sanitized the word, undoubtedly so he could get away with such talk in 1922. I don't know when mankind first noticed that babies who are learning to talk at least appear to pick up the bad words before they learn the good, even if it is only because the bad words stand out more. But this now long running source of humor, the child who learns everything, including trash talk, by emulating others, must have also been well known 90 years ago. 10/20/12, Back again. I've been thinking, since I obviously have nothing better to do than consider the stages of development, 90 years ago, of a comic strip character. But I now think that it is most accurate to say that Skeezix took his first step in the February 17, 1922 daily but actually first began to walk in this strip.
