DescriptionBernie Wrightson - Swamp ThingI got this piece directly from the Wrightson's, and was thrilled to add this as the Crown Jewel of my collection... And, like so many kids in the early 70's reading so many run of the mill comics, and then to stumble across Swamp Thing, and the incredible attention to detail throughout the read... Well, for myself... this is what led lifelong appreciation of pretty much everything Wrightson puts to canvas/paper... I've read articles with some questioning what is left in this master, but after 40+ years of contributing greatly to the art world, I still believe Wrightson is as sharp as ever when he wants to be... But like all people with true passion and talent, it gets harder to muster the energy as we get older! A case in point: my father was one of the Top 10 living master engravers for quite a period of time, but just last year, came to the realization he can no longer produce at the calibre he once did without putting himself under tremendous pressure, this was just after his 79th birthday... It is sad in a way but hard on his health to deliver, so the bright side is, he no longer suffers from the constant burden to produce high calibre engraving to meet the expectations of customers. He now engraves for himself only, no pressures, expectations, just for fun and to recollect... God bless... Bernie is some years younger than my dad, but I'd think be celebrating his 65th birthday (perhaps this year?) very soon, and though I hope he doesn't put his pens and inks away anytime soon... There is probably no one more deserving alive and producing today... The problem with being at the top, is remaining their as younger more ambitious talents come in to their own rights... Bernie Wrightson owes nothing to anyone any longer, save himself and Liz... But I for one, sure am glad he had this Swamp Thing available, and though I think it's of fairly recent vintage, the quality and depth of detail in this Swamp Thing still makes the image leap from the page as brilliantly as ever... HOLY COW Joseph!!!! Did you just clean out Bernie's portfolio? This is such a great Swamp Thing by the Master himself!

But, I can vouch for the fact my wallets pretty thin! I've got another piece I acquired from a guy in Dallas to arrive tomorrow aptly titled "The Reaper"... It's just too cool... It's a Merry Christmas indeed this year and it'd be tough for anyone to wipe the smile from my face... :)
