Description

John Forte was the original artist for "Tales of the Legion of Super Heroes" starting with Adventure Comics #300 and "Tales of the Bizarro World" in the issues leading up to that enduring series. The latter was the real origin of all the Bizarro World references that have entered pop culture from "Seinfeld" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".

Forte died long before comic fandom took off and worked at a company and a time when comic art was actively discarded. Hence, not much of this work survives. This short-lived comic strip, which I believe dates from 1946, is one such example.

What popularity "South Sea Girl" had probably came primarily from the eye candy title character, obviously influenced by Dorothy Lamour in movies such as "Hurricane". The writer, judging from this example, needed lessons in narrative, going from the announcement that a forbidden island exists to well into the journey (and impending peril) in the space between the third and fourth panel. This switches the usual narrative flaw of continuity strips of the period that seemed to take a week for a character to pick up the phone.
