Description
Philip Lyford: Specialty piece / love letter / self-portrait
An incredible piece presumably created as a presentation to his wife or girlfriend in 1908. Two sheets have been “married” together into a single 10”x14” original. On the left hand is a finished ink & watercolor of a man proposing to a woman, initialed PL & dated 1908 (when Lyford would have been about 21). On the right hand side is a delightful & funny romantic poem done in wild phonetic dialect: “luv stuch uz yurs wil neavur neavur di / yu neavur maid a donut or a pi / but yu kann lurn ann watt yu do not no / wil be awlrite becaws i luv yu so.” It goes on a great length like this & is annotated at the bottom: “udapted frum a klassick.” Philip Lyford (1887–1950) did poster illustration during World War One, became one of the premier advertising artists in Chicago & illustrated for Saturday Evening Post, Redbook & other top magazines of the day.
A touching personal document and a great piece of cartooning!
