Description

This is a full production-sized (7" by 23") spoof of Rex Morgan MD that Wallace Wood did for Mad Magazine #57 (Sept. 1960), "If Magazines Carried Comic
Strips", If Rex Morgan MD Was Carried by Stereo Review. Confronted with a patient who has swallowed stereo equipment and only speaks in musical notes, his only concern is the sound quality of those notes. A so-so gag at best, but a great example of the characteristic Mad cluttered panel style and a fine artifact from Mad's glory days. You literally have to look at this several times to get all the gags and surprises in the background. Look at Rex's hand in the first panel, it appears Wood slipped one past the censors.

This contains a number of Woodisms, the trademark big nose character, the peculiar vision of the 1950's jazz man, the random body parts, and, of course the Wood babe he manages to stick in every panel though she only has business in the first. Look at the detail he put into this, look at the patient's shirt all by itself, amazing.

Wally Wood was still Mad's senior and foremost artist in 1960 and was the one they usually used to imitate various comic strips. Though the style fits well enough for purposes of satire, no one would confuse this with a real Rex Morgan strip. The real Rex did not look this buff, hairy arms and all. Rex's real nurse was practically flat chested with tiny hips and boy-length hair. All in all, the style of the strip at the time was the kind of competent, crisp, bland style one normally associates with public service pamplets.
