Description
Let's start with the bad: Rai was my least favoured of Valiant's line of heroes.

Now that that's been taken care of, DAMMIT!!! I'VE PUT MY HANDS ON A MILLER'S UNITY COVER!!!

When I got back into comics in the '90s, Valiant was all the rage. For some reason (sure it mustn't have been the art, because it wasn't that great at all, except for A&A by BWS) I picked up a few books and got hooked on the spot. I just plain liked the characters and the action, so I started looking for back issues: my dealer had pretty much all of'em and, with a few exceptions, I didn't pay much more than cover price. One of these exception was Rai, and I didn't really feel comfy in shelling out a few tens for his books because I didn't much care for him, but I wanted to get the whole line so I had to go for it. His covers were always lame, but when I scooped up the whole Unity crossover at once, this one sang to me: the hero, more muscular than usual; the geisha-like damsel in distress; the japanese armoured monster holding a pretty undersized -yet still menacing- cleaver in his hand while being katanaed in two... COOL!

And now, about 20 years later, it's finally in my hands! A Miller cover. From my fave period of his graphic production. From one of my fave comics lines (up to that point). Life could be worse.

Sure, the Unity collage covers were just a footnote in Miller's career (even though they made a portfolio out of'em) compared to Daredevil, the Dark Knight and Sin City, but -damn!- this sure ain't no footnote in my collection!!!
Notice how fabric's design, and Rai's chest symbol, have been added by colorist.

This cover has been also reprinted in the Extras section of the "Valiant Masters - From Honor to Strength" hardcover.

I loved Miller's style during this hard goodby period. He hadn't gone into the pure contrast the later Sin city stuff did but he was using it heavily for sure. I avoided Vailant like the plague because i disliked the art. In hindsight it was probably the reproduction the coloring got. Either way, This is a fantastic cover! I love it! Congratulations!

Wow, a Miller Unity cover! Now that's an impressive pickup! What made Valiant great was the stories, while most art for their books (other than by BWS and select others) was merely adequate at times. They were the Yin to Image's Yang, whereas Image had all the great art but lesser stories. Man I loved the '90s for comics! Congrats on this epic score!

While Rai may have been your least favorite Valiant character, as far as providing subject matter for FM to draw, he couldn't have been any better! From The Hand in FM's DD days, to Ronin, his Lone Wolf covers, and even thru to Miho in Sin City, the Eastern world has always been a subject near & dear to FM's heart and career. This may actually be the best of all the Valiant covers he did. Major congrats!

Late to dance, but this is a spectacular cover. Don't think I ever read a single Valiant book, but Miller is the star here. Artistically, this is A+ Miller.

Like many have said, Rai was not my thing, but hot damn if this isn't great FM art. As dynamic as it gets, action packed, and great visual narrative as well.

So cool. I never knew Miller drew a cover. If he drew for Rai I certainly would have read it. Congrats on acquiring this cover!
