Description

Grim and gritty action from Action, precursor to 2000AD - but it'd be grimmer and grittier if the white-out (and the Whitehouse!) hadn't got its way. This was published post-ban (ie, after the self-appointed guardians of moral rectitude demanded the taming of the sevenpenny nightmare) but was clearly produced prior to this, as signs of censorship rage across the page, doing their best to neuter our hero Danny Kuziak. The chap at the bottom left, for instance, is only 'winged', is he, Danny? Certainly doesn't look like it! And don't worry about those poor sods splattered by the exploding vault door - they're only 'unconscious'. A fascinating historical curio - but also some lovely art with gloriously bold inks.

Note: The identity of the artist of this piece caused quite a lot of discussion on the 2000AD forums - some pointed out similarities in certain panels to the style of Jose Ortiz, whilst there was further debate as to precisely when Mike White stopped working on 'Hell's Highway'. Personally, I vacillated wildly in terms of my own thoughts on the matter. I can't pretend to be particularly knowledgeable about this era of comic art, this piece being from the year of my birth, 1976, and my own era of knowledge consequently being much more mid-80s onwards. That said I've settled on labelling it as by Mike White.
