"Tad" Dorgan: Judge Rummy's Court, Circa 1919

This is great. When I went to a Con and saw these in person, they really stood out for their simplicity and clarity. I notice that he signs many of them TAD and then "27" beneath. Since this one isn't from 1927, do you know why it's signed thus?

When this happened, the original dates (which were month/day dates, never with years) were usually scraped out and rewritten in a later hand. So these numbers are unreliable for dating, and that's why they're so confusing. The only real standard for dating these is to find their original publication date in the NY Journal. Almost all of the Indoor Sports and Judge Rummy drawings in my collection have scraped out and renumbered dates.
