DescriptionAnother kind of esoteric gag lost in the mists of Tad's slangy time. I guess the joke is that the guy would rather go to jail than back to his wife? The song quoted at the bottom was copyrighted in 1919, so I'm guessing this dates to Fall or Winter of that year. Another "plop" ending!Social/Sharing |

This is great. When I went to a Con and saw these in person, they really stood out for their simplicity and clarity. I notice that he signs many of them TAD and then "27" beneath. Since this one isn't from 1927, do you know why it's signed thus?

Since this one isn't from 1927, do you know why it's signed thus?The problem of the inscrutable numbers on TAD's drawings as they survived is that many of them were re-used and reprinted at various times. When this happened, the original dates (which were month/day dates, never with years) were usually scraped out and rewritten in a later hand. So these numbers are unreliable for dating, and that's why they're so confusing. The only real standard for dating these is to find their original publication date in the NY Journal. Almost all of the Indoor Sports and Judge Rummy drawings in my collection have scraped out and renumbered dates.
