I've said that one really good purchase justifies going to a convention like Long Beach Comic Con. This year (2013) I got one spectacular purchase. I'm friends with Rowena Morrill but hadn't seen her in years. I asked if she had anything for sale and she only had this one item, the pencil preliminary for her iconic piece, "Forbidden Fragrance" and for a price I would pay. To the uninitiated, this is a big deal, a piece so identified with her that the newspapers mentioned it as one of her pieces in their descriptions of her when she made the news years ago. I Googled Rowena & "Forbidden Fragrance" and got over 400 hits.

She said that she didn't do it for any particular book, calendar, etc. but just for its own sake and it has appeared in books, calendars, etc. She says even the black and white version has been published. The 58% mark in the corner is a printer's mark indicating that it was to be published a 58% size.

This is incredibly masterful, amazingly so given its small size. I am posting it actual size. The margins top and bottom are about the same but the top margin has onionskin tissue paper glued to it so keep the pencil from smudging. I left that part off. This is a grail.
