DescriptionOne of the many attempts to jump on the bandwagon that was Marvel's success in the 60's, Harvey comics introduced a (short-lived) new line of super heroes of their own. None took off and the whole thing disappeared fairly quickly but the characters themselves were ~gloriously~ crazy 60's :) I remember mentioning in the thing I wrote for the Crisis piece there've been any number of characters that I've wanted to "do something" with but could never think of what. It wasn't until the last couple of years that I read some random Harvey issue where they'd hyped these new heroes as "The New Champions!" going so far as to give the words a separate font. Soon as I saw that I knew how to work it. After all the solo series had come out Harvey would've released their new Avengers-like series: The NEW Champons! featuring their biggest (well, you know) stars! Spyman-Jack Q. Frost-the Glowing Gladiator-Bee-Man-Magicmaster!In thinking about who to ask Dann was the perfect fit, I think, to capture style but bring it up to date. Chris is always the go-to for me for this kinda thing. Not to knock Dann in any way -at all- but Chris is such a great guy to work with. Aces to both for this set of imaginary covers! In this, the fourth and final cover, we've got the BIG REVEAL of the masterminds behind the whole cross-time caper. Destiny! and Half-Mask! (think Kang and the Red-Skull). One thing I'll say for sure. In reading these old Harvey issues I've learned how important a good villain is for your hero/ine. As cool as these heroes could've been they were seriously let down by some way boring baddies. That said, going Kirby and Dann's pencils really make up the difference :) This cover pays homage to Steve Erwin's New Gods #25. Original size 11x17 Social/Sharing |

Just curious based on the mask used here is Dann basing it on the original Black Cat uniform?

Just an incredible series of commissions. I'd buy all of these if they were actual comics in a New York minute.

Hate to see this series come to an end. I already had Dann in mind for a Nova related project. He really did some fine work on this series. Well done Kevin!
