Description

Nikita Khrushchev made multiple appearances in Pogo storylines; this one is from 1959 when Russia and the U.S. were in the "race to space" and Russia had a slight lead at the time. Khrushchev was portrayed as a Russian bear with a top hat in this sequence. I especially like the dialogue between Owl and Khrushchev in the final two panels.

Besides being published in nationwide newspapers in 1959, this daily was also reprinted on page 147 of "Beau Pogo" in 1960.

Not to burst your bubble but the bear with the money vest is W.C. Fields. The physical mannerism and dialog are all Fields. I noticed the daily is even funnier when you read the bears dialog with W.C. Field's voice.

Actually the face looks like W.C. Fields also. I think if I recall his nose got bigger and redder because of his alcoholism.
