Karate Kid vs. Solomon Grundy by Brent Schoonover

I discovered Brent Schoonover's art a few years ago, and have been a fan ever since. I've had him on my commission list for quite a while, and finally pulled the trigger when he ran a commissions drive a couple months ago. I gave Brent a few opponents to choose from for this Karate Kid commission, and Brent wanted to draw a big monstrous character, so we went with Solomon Grundy! My first exposure to Grundy was in the Super Friends cartoon, which I watched as much as possible when I was a kid. I loved his speech patterns in that show and I really liked his look. Later I read many of his comics appearances, and my favorites were probably in the 90's Starman series and the Scott Kolins Solomon Grundy miniseries. And Brent went all out here, drawing a huge, scary-looking Grundy, who towers over the determined-looking Karate Kid. I really love Brent's decision to use the grey paper here, along with the grey tones. Thanks, Brent!

So how would Mr. Val Armorr fare in a fight against Mr. Cyrus Gold? Well, I think it would be a tough battle for Val for sure. Grundy may be dumb most of the time, but he is crazy strong and extremely difficult to hurt. Val will have to fight smart and rely on his speed a lot if he wants to win. But I think he can do it, especially if he stays out of Grundy's reach and uses his Legion Flight Ring to his advantage.

Very cool! I have a fondness for Grundy. I'm sure Val would out smart him for the win if he kept his distance! Great art!

Great piece, Travis! But I think you're overthinking it! Wouldn't Val just find a pressure point and make Grundy fold like a cheap suit? ;)

Well, the problem with pressure points is that Grundy is an undead creature made up of flesh and plant material from Slaughter Swamp, so I doubt that those kinds of weaknesses apply to him. But good question!
