Description

As far as I know, based on past sales of Gasoline Alley daily strips, very few of the single panel examples exist. While these condensed strips appeared regularly before Skeezix was introduced on 14 February 1921 and for a short time thereafter, I am only aware of a handful of existing originals in this format -- and I didn't have an example . . . until now. I still would like to obtain an original for one of the even rarer single panels which shows Skeezix, but, until such time as I can get one of those, I'm happy to have this strip from 6 months before the baby's appearance.

Anyway, who needs Skeezix when you can have Elmer instead? Elmer, the son of alley residents, Avery and Emily, was a regular character in Gasoline Alley until Skeezix came along. After that, Elmer. along with Bill and Amy's son, Peaches/Shorty, almost vanished from the strip, except for a few appearances in the Sunday pages and a couple of cameo roles in holiday strips. Although I already had the Christmas 1920 strip with Shorty, I didn't have a single image of Elmer until I got this strip. I believe that I now have an image of every significant character who appeared in Gasoline Alley from the beginning of the strip up until 1939, when Skeezix graduated from High School.

This strip is from the second annual road trip sequence, on the return from Walt, Avery, Emily, and Elmer's rather ill-fated camping adventure.
