Description

The strip Rick O'Shay began in 1958 when westerns were near the peak of their popularity. It began as a funny strip a la "Tumbleweeds" and quickly became a continuity strip during the week though it remained a gag strip (albeit with many gags recyled more than once) on Sundays.

It involved the adventures of Deputy Sheriff Rick O'Shay and his pal, the gunslinger with a heart of gold, Hipshot Percussion. The strip lasted almost exactly two decades in the capable hands of Stan Lynde who, for reasons I am not aware of, left the syndicate and was forced to leave the strip behind. Rick O'Shay went on briefly after that under another's pen.

Visually fascinating and entertaining, Rick O'Shay was the rare combination of a dramatic strip with the bright look of a funny strip. It was itself a bright spot at a time (the late 1950's and early 1960's) when ponderous dramatic strips and dumb ones (often literally dumb like Mr. Mum) dominated the funny papers.

This uncharacteristically romantic strip is from October 23, 1969 and shows Hipshot with his apparently Hispanic girlfriend. I do not know to what extent she was a continuing character.

So this is where this one went! I remember when I saw it for sale but don't know why I hesitated to get it at the last moment. Excellent inks, blacks and layout.

I remember reading this strip years and years ago. Beautiful, heartfelt, and dramatic.

Yes, I don't know the context of this scene, but it is all you describe on its own.
