Filmation - James T. Kirk and Mudd from Star Trek the Animated Series

Space.... the final frontier. These are the (animated) voyages of the starship ENTERPRISE! I don't expect folks today to really understand how big Star Trek was to some of us. And I GET that because watching it now doesn't compare to the effects or even the story lines. But it was huge. So when they made the animated series with a bunch of new stories.... my little head just exploded with excitement and wonder. And I would say that it didn't disappoint. The animated series had many of the original voices... which lent even MORE to the quality of the show.



Here is a set of images that make up a single cel featuring Captain James T. Kirk and one of his more humorous foils, Harry Mudd. The additional images show the three individual cels that make up the single image; the technique is used to just change a cel with eyes or mouth rather than need to redo the entire image when the only action is eye movement or speaking.



And here's the background of the series for those that are unfamiliar. The following is taken from Wikipedia: The series was produced by Filmation in association with Paramount Television and ran for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 on NBC, airing a total of twenty-two half-hour episodes. An early Filmation proposal for this series had children assigned to each of the senior officers as cadets, including a young Vulcan for Mr. Spock. According to interviews with Norm Prescott, Paramount offered Roddenberry a substantial sum of money to abandon creative control of the project and let Filmation proceed with their "kiddy space cadet" idea. Roddenberry refused. Filmation would later develop the idea into its own original live action program, Space Academy, in 1977.

The writers of the animated series used, essentially, the same writers' guide that was used for the live-action Star Trek: The Original Series.
