DescriptionI know that the general consensus (which, by the way, is absolutely correct) is that this piece went way, way over market value. But, very, very rarely, there is a piece which just catches one's eye and I will have to live with this one-off "madness" (and severe financial deficit). But it is a really gorgeous piece. I admire Don Heck as an artist but, respectfully, the Wally Wood inks have transformed this piece beyond what even Don could have imagined. Thankfully, now, both have books devoted to them. But, beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder. And we should just leave it at that. Original art is not merely about money or who has the bragging rights. There is much in this hobby that is beginning to turn many (including myself) off, and I debated long and hard about whether to place this in my gallery (and be accused of the stupidity that is, I freely confess, so evident). But, in the end, I decided that we should never lose (or, rather, compromise) our own sense of wonder - experienced during an age of relative innocence that now seems to have occurred so very long ago; and it would also have been so churlish to have simply hidden this piece away in my collection and not share it.When I wrote this, I had no idea that there would be such an encouraging response from those of us for whom original art is a passion and joy. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your immense encouragement. This means so very much to me. The negativity in the hobby was, as I have alluded to above, beginning to affect my attitude towards our hobby. This helps so very much. My grateful and sincere thanks once again to all of you who have taken the time and trouble to encourage me. Social/Sharing |

Well said, and I admire and agree completely with everything you wrote. The page itself, I think, is just extraordinary. Who but Wood would've inked Quicksilver like that? These were memorable issues for me as a kid. This is a once in a lifetime kind of page. Congratulations!

There is no "fmv" for exceptional pieces, and this one certainly fills the bill. Kudos! (and, you get extra points for the first use of "churlish" on CAF ;-)

This piece is pure Marvel Silver Age magic. I agree that Wood inks are what make this truly special, with all due respect to Mr. Heck. You should enlarge the Scarlet Witch panel inot a mega poster. That will make it a bargain vs. any Liechtenstein!

I have to completely agree with you on what you wrote. IF one can afford the piece and regardless of what others feel about FMV, it all comes down to what YOU feel comfortable with paying. I don't know what this page sold for, but i do know that this is one of those pages burned into my memory from first reading this issue (as a reprint) but the beautiful slick inks over Don's smart pencils are stunning to behold. A hearty congratulations on a great page! I for one am glad you chose not to hide it away!

Heartfelt and eloquent as well as being seconded. A wonderful page no matter how you came to (luckily) possess it. Enjoy! Bravo!

Stunning page. I agree with what you wrote, also. There can be a number of negatives in the hobby, I try to focus on the positives/purity of the hobby and attempt to just enjoy spectacular pieces like this that bring back fond memories.

Heck is such an underrated artist--and he never looked better than when Wood inked him. This is a great page and given how the auction played out you clearly weren't the only one who wanted it. And you are so right, in our hobby we often forget that true ART is supposed to move you--the power of a page to do that goes beyond dollars and cents.

The Wood inks are great, particularly in panels 2 and 5. Thank you for deciding not to be churlish.

Passion is passion and your words count for everyone of us! This being stated, the Heck/Wood combination is as rare as it is superb! You have picked just the Right Issue to fall in love with the medium!...

Absolutely gorgeous piece in every way. When I saw this in the HA preview I knew it was going to go north of 20k, it simply has that type of quality to it. Being a collector that has often been ridiculed for over-paying for pieces that move me, I assure you that the emotional value you'll get from looking at this piece each day will far outweigh the financial one you had to give to acquire it. Kudos to you for having both the conviction and BALLS to go for it :)

What a wonderful work of art with two greats collaborating on the visuals! I Adore the Scarlet Witch's face which is enchanting. The beauty of the piece is matched by the elucidating description which calls on each of us to remain open to the amazing.

Congrats on the puck-up! I always thought Heck even back then was best with a strong inker and Wood certainly fits that bill and more. Strong inking throughout but especially that great take on a racing Quicksilver. Too often Quicksilver was shown as just a barely recognizable blur-- great to see a more illustrative depiction of him running.

I think you raise some important issues about our 'hobby' and were collecting might be heading, particularly at a financial level and all the complexities that compound this; but with this wonderful page you dont need to 2nd guess your purchase. Don Heck has been highly undervalued (artistically and financially by today's standards) and with beautiful inks courtesy of Wally Wood, the character depiction, action and layout are quite superb here...worth everything and more that you shelled out for it. This page captures the joy of this book and the mid 60's Marvel Silver Age perfectly.Congratulations on an excellent purchase of a classic page.

If you find that this page makes you happy then no matter the final price you didnt overpay for it. Sure, it will increase in value over time but if I see an Avengers 26 page out there, I will go in all the way. It is beautiful, magnificent but most importantly it is yours to be caretaker of. Enjoy

I am delighted to see such a fantastic page got "upgraded " I love Heck but you are so right, the inks put this on a whole different level

Many thanks, Aidan. Although I am not in the hobby for material reasons, I think that the market has now caught up with what I paid for it. It is a strange old world. But, yes, I totally agree with you. As I mentioned in my description, that sense of wonder is something that cannot be costed. And wishing you the very best in your quest for an Avengers 26 page!

Yes, Aidan, absolutely. Wood's inks almost always made any pencils by any artist better. He was a genius, albeit a tragic one whom we lost too early.

Many thanks, Kirk. Yes, those Wally Wood inks are fantastic. Very few artists could ink the way he did. Many thanks also for your kind encouragement.

I love revisiting pages like this especially on days when the world can feel bleak. Its a fun ride down memory lane of childhood when the world felt a lot simpler. The 2nd and 5th panel are exquisite
