The cover to the 2000AD 2014 Free Comic Book Day edition. I've wanted a cover from one of these 2000AD specials for a little while and luckily one came up that I could afford. Henry Flint used an unusual technique for this one...
According to Pete Well's 2000AD Covers Uncovered blog, this is what Henry said he did:
"I tried a weird method on this ... years 2000AD free comic book day cover. After inking the covers they were scanned. Then, I fully painted over the original inks in acrylics pretty much destroying them, deliberately going over the black lines. Once I'd scanned in the painted covers it was a matter of using photoshop to add the black inks as a separate layer over the top.
The acrylics didn't scan very well so they were livened up with various controls on Photoshop. The method proved to be very time consuming and destroyed the original so don't think I'll be doing it again in the future."So this cover, along with the cover to Prog 1862, are kind-of unique. Whilst the end result isn't perhaps as attractive as the pure inking or traditional painting methods, it shows Henry is willing to try stuff, which I think is admirable. And also there are only two pages in existence where he used this method!
