DescriptionKathy and I were featured in an article about her lack of enthusiasm concerning my collecting of comics during the early days of our marriage. (She's since recovered.)An award winning article was published about it and the image was used for the magazine cover. Here are the links: * Article * Award The additional images has a photo of the article hanging on our den wall. So you might wonder what led to the article. It started when the editor of the neighborhood magazine contacted my LCS (Bedrock City Comic Company) about whether or not they had any clients that lived in the area that might be willing to sit through an interview. Being a publicity hound, I volunteered. The interview was over the phone followed-up with clarification e-mails. It started with the normal questions - how did you start, how long have you been collecting, etc., but the conversation wasn't catching fire. So, I broke out the story of why I stopped for a decade. I've told that story so often that my friends, neighbors, children, and wife are really bored, but it was news for these folks. In all fairness to me and my story, many people have told me it's awesome so I don't pay attention to the children's rolling eyes. As I told the story, I got the feeling that the reporter now had a hook - a real human interest story; not some nerd collector story. After the interview, the editor contacted me about photographs and, one Saturday, a photographer was sent to the house and that was fun. I posed with some rare comics, but when Kathy came in and we used the just framed Mutts piece (popular comic strip in the state) it was clear that would be the one used. That picture is in the Additional Images and on the article link. One more piece of trivia, the artist did the cover by computer so no OA :( , I asked. He's the roommate of the editor's son or something like that. The original cover idea photograph didn't work so they were desperate for a cover and the idea of using this guy came up. He whipped it out based on the article copy in a few hours saving the day. He has a regular feature in the magazine now. So, we got the artist a regular gig and got the reporter an award. Not a bad day's work. :) Social/Sharing |
