DescriptionI remember distinctly going to the comic shop near my office on a Saturday morning many years ago. I was there holding Rebecca, a little baby at the time, while standing with the other two (~2 and ~4) at the spinner rack. I asked them which comic they wanted. Elizabeth pointed to Betty & Veronica Double Digest 14 by Dan DeCarlo and his son, Jim. When I asked why, she said, "Because it has mommy on it." She was referring to Veronica. With an argument like that, how could I say no?Many years later, I decided that a recreation of the cover would be a nice graduation gift from me to my eldest upon her college graduation. I had hoped that Dan DeCarlo might do it, but discovered I was about 20 years too late. Worse, I learned that both of his sons had also passed. While pondering what to do, I discovered that John Sterling Lucas was taking commissions. Since Katy Keene was her favorite character, he seemed to be a likely artist. I contacted him and he did this for me (click to embiggen): ![]() You'll notice that he extended the cover to include Katy, her sister (Sis), and my daughter, Allie. As you can see, this cover is fairly well known in our family. :) I've bought a lot of art this year (2015) and really wasn't looking at auctions because I didn't want the temptation. However, I was in the Netherlands on a business trip and that night I wasn't ready to sleep so I decided to cruise the ComicLink auction. As I scrolled through the many, many (9 long pages) auction items, I stumbled across the OA for a Dan DeCarlo comic cover, but not just any such cover, the cover of the first comic that I ever bought my daughters! Yep, it turned up at auction and I bid on it. I won it and I'm very glad to own it. Hope you enjoyed the story and art. One more thing, the joke was used four times (at least). Originally, it was used for the 1958-07-31 Archie daily strip drawn by Bob Montana, Archie's creator. Later, it was used on at least three covers. The first cover was Archie Giant Series Magazine #32 (June 1965). It was recast as the cover to Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica #188 (August 1971) before being used on my Betty and Veronica Double Digest (August 1989). I've put all the strip and the three covers in the Additional Images for reference. P.S. Years ago, I saw a DeCarlo image that I loved, but I got cheap. If you see it, please let me know. ![]() Social/Sharing |
