“So, I loved MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. My initial idea was only to homage the classic ROAD WARRIOR shot of Max walking down the center of a road, but use Furiosa instead. That developed into this as I doodled it. I didn’t spend a lot of time worrying about making her look like Charliez Theron since it’s a bit of a one-off, but instead on developing the overall feel of the artwork and the character. Making sand look like sand, giving it depth, and getting the right attitude and textures on Furiosa.
The large sun wasn’t intended early on, but in my opinion became necessary once I decided to add the war rig, and it’s doing its job pretty well of balancing both the curve of the truck as well as that mass of black down there. Having her slice through both the sun and the rig really brings attention back to Furiosa, and is one reason I didn’t add any detail to the greased-up portion of her head. That black on (off) white pops.”
