I had seen Mary Perkins On Stage in the newspapers growing up and not paid much attention to it... save one story. But over the last decade I have fallen in love with the strip. There are only a few strips that deserve the "classic" title and this is one of them. The characters are fully developed, stories are more than intriguing (something impossible in today's newspaper strips) and the art is consistently great. Plus, Charles Pelto's Classic Comics Press has collected the strips (soon to complete the entire run) so you can read the stories unimpeded.

This is a really nice daily from 1958. Mary Perkins On Stage first appeared on February 10, 1957, so not only is this one fairly early (about 20 months in) in the 22 year tenure, it is one of the first appearances of Johnny Q, the dashing thug with the cauliflower ear who shows up many times over the years pining for Mary. Here, Johnny Q is on his boat calling Mary to pass on some "information". Great shots of both characters.

The early dailies were larger than the ones after 1960 which all settled into a similar format.
