Description

King presented Avery's wife Emily, who was otherwise an intelligent and sensible adult, as a typical (at least as stereotypes go) woman who knows little about cars. Avery has his own failings, including an apparent inability to understand the thinking of women, which is frequently shown throughout the run of Gasoline Alley.

Before Skeezix was introduced in 1921, all the main residents of Gasoline Alley, not just Walt Wallet, were prominently featured in the strip. Only after Skeezix proved to be so popular with readers did characters such as Avery and Emily assume roles as supporting characters rather than being main stars of the series.
