Description
Uncanny X-Men #168 is one of my favorite issues from artist Paul Smith's amazing run on the title alongside writer Chris Claremont. Claremont filled this issue that followed the conclusion of the Brood Saga with a tale that weaves action, adventure, intrigue, mystery, and romance, while setting the stage for future story lines. This issue also brought Kitty Pryde to the forefront and indelibly etched her into the hearts of X-fans.

That was certainly the case with the 12 year-old me, who couldn't help but to develop a massive crush on Kitty Pryde. She was smart, pretty, she had super powers, a pet dragon and could totally kick ass. From that issue forward, Kitty was one of my favorite things about the X-Men. While she continued to serve the sidekick role, since she was the youngest member of the team and provided a character that young readers could relate to, this issue established Kitty as a character in her own right.

As good as Paul Smith's art looks on the finished page, I'm always amazed at how much better it looks in black and white at the full 11" x 17" size. The cleanliness and simplicity of his line work is fantastic and well complemented by Bob Wiacek's inks.

I love how Illyana sits there in a slump, fiddling with Stevie's cane. She is so over Kitty's drama, and maybe a bit miffed that Kitty considers the New Mutants (of which Illyana is a member) to be beneath her. It's also nice that Paul Smith knows that not all women are DD cup size, especially dancers like Stevie and Kitty.
