Description

Yes, this is a page from a Superman comic, but the reason I love it is that it serves as a splashy spotlight for a somewhat obscure character that's rooted in the Golden Age of comics. Facing off against a monstrous incarnation of the Eradicator is S.T.R.I.P.E., a modern reinvention of Stripesy, the Golden Age sidekick of the Star-Spangled Kid. Geoff Johns reshaped the character as the stepdad of Stargirl, the young heroine carrying on the Kid's legacy in the 21st century, but I like that S.T.R.I.P.E. takes centre stage here in a great action sequence.

The detail in panels 1 and 3 is stunning, and I love how Mahnke breaks up those two moments of immense action with a quick closeup of the armored hero. Adding to the fun are the bombastic sound effects right on the board.

The page is signed by Mahnke, and one can see the remnants of his loose pencil lines on the board as well. There's some graying around the edges of the page, clear evidence of heavy handling of the page by those who have possessed it, but maybe the leftover remnants of the artists' efforts in crafting the page as well.

Though the page is from 2001, it's got another vintage element as well: a DC copyright stamp on the reverse.
