After quitting school, Donald Southam Lawrence made his comic debut with the superhero 'Marvelman' followed by some other albums. But his fame came from two other series - 'Storm' and 'The Rise and Fall of the Trigian Empire'. The latter series was a comic epic about a self-appointed emperor. The dubious setting of this series resulted in him getting fired when he asked for royalties. ('Trigië' was published in a magazine.) Don Lawrence was between jobs when a Dutch publisher asked him to do a science-fiction series, written by Dutch artist Martin Lodewijk, for the magazine Eppo. This series, entitled 'Storm', now consists of twenty-two albums and has earned him a lot of dedicated fans. Don Lawrence died on 29 December 2003. He received a knighthood by Dutch Queen Beatrix.
