Description

Concept/story development artwork of Stromboi's wagon used in the making of Pinocchio (1940).Graphite on trimmed animation paper as if it was going to be mounted for a model sheet. At this time Walt's great inspirational artist and architectural draftsman was assigned to "The Character Model Department" where he was churning out hundreds of drawings of which many found themselves on model sheets. His renderings put personality and atmosphere into the cast with costumes, background scenery, settings and the inanimate props. Stromboli's theater wagon and home can be seen leaving town with Pinocchio as a prisoner in "The Disney Villain", by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas Hyperion, New York, 1993, page 64. We can also see the gypsy wagon constructed for animators reference by my past friend Bob Jones who formed the model department, in "THE LOST NOTEBOOK Herman Schultheis and the secrets of Walt Disney's Movie Magic" by John Canemaker, the Walt Disney Family Foundation Press,2014, page 191. Hurter had a fabulous memory and could recreate any thing he had seen before, so the wagon probably came from his European past. The FIRST Pinocchio model sheet was done by Hurter and can be found in this gallery room.
