Description

The Legion of Super-Heroes has made many allies over the years, and most of them have fully-formed personalities making them just as interesting as any Legionnaire. The creation (and funding) of the Legion owes almost everything to R.J. Brande, who also may or may not have been the Martian Manhunter and/or the Durlan from L.E.G.I.O.N., but was definitely Chameleon Boy's father. Dev-Em was a Kryptonian (except when he was a Daxamite or a Titanian) who started off as a mischievous antagonist for Superboy, before turning himself around and joining the Interstellar Counter-Intelligence Corps. Gigi Cusimano and Shvaughn Erin were members of the Science Police, who both worked closely with the Legion and had strong relationships with individual Legionnaires. Loomis and Gemini both were introduced in the "Five Years Later" era. Loomis was an old friend of Cosmic Boy's, and became the very opinionated handyman for the team. Gemini was the "step between god and man", whatever that means. She appeared in less than a dozen issues, but in that time managed to kill Darkseid, time travel, and somehow possibly travel to the Image Comics Universe.

This lineup of allies includes Dev-Em, Shvaughn Erin, Gigi Cusimano, R.J. Brande, Gemini, and Loomis. The first thing that I noticed when I saw this piece is how Joel did a great job with Gemini and her huge hair. I love how weird it makes her look. And the Science Police ladies look super-cute in the background there, especially Gigi's smile. But my favorite of all of the characters here is grumpy old Loomis! Joel made him appropriately scruffy-looking, and he conveys so much personality with so few lines on his face. Thanks again for another awesome commission, Joel!
