Description

For as long as I can remember, "Famous Monsters" has always played a major part in my memories being a horror kid. Born in '69, I was treated to all things monsters from vitamins and model kits to toys and all night horror-thons. You couldn't turn down a toy aisle or record area with running across some of the coolest monster items ever seen - it was a wonderful time that I wouldn't trade for anything. Without a doubt, leading the pack would have been the quintessential monster extraordinaire, Mr Basil Gogos! If you have an issue of Famous Monster burned in your memory, chances are it would be one of fifty covers painted by this living legend.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the artist at Heroes con 2016. In fact, My wife and I spent thirty minutes talking with his rep, Linda, her dog, Cleopatra and Basil at their booth (the only purpose of our trip). They are such wonderful and extremely friendly folks. I had him sign a few vintage Warren posters and some hardbacks. I also got a picture of him holding my original charcoal by him entitled, "My Dracula" that was done purely for his entertainment. It's quite a nice piece that reminds me of a cross between "London After Midnight" and a demented pilgrim. I love the three brides, the castle on the hill and the poor impaled victim against a moonlite sky. Such a moody and dark piece. Owning an original by one of the masters is such an amazing feeling and something I never dreamed would happen. Long Live Basil.

Whoah... the definition of cool! Basil was in a class by himself with those Famous Monsters of Filmland covers (my youthful monster phase paralleled yours), and to meet him is amazing. Discovering that he's still killing it artistically is an even greater thrill!
