Description
Time for a story…Years ago I was a journalist on The Observer in London, the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world. I regularly commissioned Chris Riddell to create illustrations for the Business section - he brought dry subjects like pensions, investments, to life. We became friends and I shared with him my love of comics and illustrated books…

One day Chris came into the office. He told me he had a gift for me. From a neighbour in Brighton, England… David Lloyd… He unveiled two pieces - a frontispiece from issue 8 and an interior from issue 10. Yes, I fully appreciate how lucky I was.

Around 20 years later, I met Mr Lloyd for the first time at the London SuperCon in February 2016. And he sat there sketching – and slightly bemused – as I told him the story. And, finally, thanked him.

Chris, by the way, went on to become one of the best children’s book illustrators, certainly in the UK, if not the world. Comic book fans may know him as the guy who illustrated the children’s UK version of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book; Dave McKean illustrated the US edition and the UK adult edition.

Agree with above - great art and story I used to go to Brighton for 2 weeks every summer in 70s/early 80s - too early for Lloyd I guess!
