I was just talking about this sequence with a friend -- we both remember it from when we were kids. IT'S SO DISTURBING! Jack was definitely not phoning it in then.

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only person disturbed by this sequence! The Swine did a lot of other nasty stuff too, and he would not have been out of place as a bad guy in The Walking Dead. I feel like he got short shrift in the end by being killed "off-camera" by a mutant river creature, but I imagine Jack was eager to move on and bring another unforgettable menace to center stage, namely, Arnim Zola.

I completely agree... this was unsettling to me as a kid reading it, too. Jack's deep feelings about these kind of people is well displayed in this sequence,
