This page was among a lot of 13 various original comic art boards I picked up for a great bargain in a package deal, after winning an initial lot on eBay. I admit this isn't exactly the most exciting board in my collection, but it's a solid example of comics storytelling craft.

Penciller Adriana Melo seemed to be a frequent creative presence in various DC titles in the early 2000s, but it doesn't seem like I've been seeing her name as much lately. That's surprising. She has a solid, pleasant style, and there's a stronger push on as of late to include work from more women. Her style is comparable to that of Nicola Scott, who's enjoyed a fair bit of success as of late (Earth 2, Black Magick, Wonder Woman).

Melo serves this rather ordinary scene quite well. While it's a conversationally driven scene, she keeps moving the "camera," shifting perspective constantly, creating the illusion of dynamic movement. Her depiction of Rose (the other identity/personality of the vigilante Thorn) isn't at all exploitive. She's lovely here, but not objectified.

It's clear that this board features original pencils and inks. There are faint pencil lines visible on close examination (they probably don't come through in the scan, though). Also of interest is the fact that Melo has roughed out three of the panels in pencil on the reverse (see additional image), so she perhaps used a lightbox technique to bring that through on the face of the board.
