Description

This page features Panday's 4th ever appearance from Pilipino Komiks 931 drawn by his co-creator and first artist - the great Steve Gan (who in international circles is known as the co-creator of Starlord of Guardians of the Galaxy fame).

This page features the main character Flavio (aka Ang Panday) in 5 of the 6 panels, portraying his satisfaction in helping a little boy without needing to use force or violence. The last 3 panels are very interesting as they show Flavio striking his hammer in poses similar to his first-ever two page appearances in Pilipino Komiks 938, and the last panel somewhat looking like the first actor who played him - Fernando Poe Jr. (FPJ).

I acquired this directly from artist Steve Gan, who said he did not originally envision FPJ to play the role because he had curly hair while Flavio has straight hair. The last panel looking like FPJ was just coincidental since Mr.Gan does not use photo reference in his drawings. Also, this page predated the film by a couple of years and was before FPJ got involved with the character.

Since the first film starring FPJ in 1981, Ang Panday has become a part of modern Filipino folklore, having been made into a movie six times and adapted into a television series twice. FPJ also went on to be posthumously recognized as National Artist of the Philippines in Film.

Ang Panday's co-creator and writer was Carlo J. Caparas who usually get most of the sole creator credits. But it was artist Steve Gan who came up with the look of Panday. This is eerily similar to most accounts of the Lee-Kirby creations in Marvel Comics. Like Kirby, Mr. Gan may have been well short-changed in getting credit and compensation for his co-creation. Also like Kirby, he wasn't returned most of his original art since they were just put in the shredder back in those days. Mr. Gan got to keep around a third of his Panday art only because he had friends in the printing department who helped sneak it out at night to return it to him.

Given the scarcity of Ang Panday original art, it is truly an honor and privilege to own a very early page from this legendary series from the artist himself. It is just icing on the cake that he even wrote a personalized dedication to me. This is a keeper for life. Thank you Mr. Gan!

Wow! Seeing the page and reading the backstory is a treat! Brings back memories of my childhood and going to the cinema with my Dad. I didn't know that Steve Gan co-created Starlord AND Panday. Very good catch, Jovi!
