DescriptionBehold, the epitome of Mephisto's portrayal, masterfully crafted by John, showcasing his unparalleled artistry and deep affinity for this diabolic persona.John meticulously crafted every aspect of the Mephisto character, pouring his passion into what he deemed the quintessential representation of this enigmatic figure. First introduced in "The Silver Surfer #3 (Marvel, Dec. 1968)", Mephisto sprung forth from the creative minds of my beloved Big John Buscema and Stan Lee. Inspired by the German folklore's Mephistopheles, a demon famously entwined in the Faust legend, they brought forth this iconic character who embodies the essence of temptation and malevolence. In the Faust legend, Faust's pact with the Devil, brokered by Mephistopheles, serves as a backdrop to the eternal struggle between good and evil. Similarly, I negotiated directly with the depths of darkness to secure this masterpiece for my collection. Without question, this is one of John's greatest masterpieces, a shining testament to his exceptional talent and creative vision! Acquired from the original owner, a close confidant of John and one of his proteges, to whom John graciously bestowed this Machiavellian marvel. Interestingly, Stan Lee expressed a fervent desire to add this original piece to his personal collection, one of the few originals he particularly cherishes due to its uniqueness and personal significance. However, owing to a prior unresolved matter regarding the Silver Surfer volume #4 originals, John respectfully declined his request. I feel even more humbled and privileged to serve as the custodian of this infernal treasure, guarding its legacy like the modern Cerberus. "Thor ventures into the abyssal domain of Mephisto on a quest to rescue the brother of his sworn adversary, Ulik the Troll!" In 2009, Randy Bowen immortalized this iconic rendition with a limited-edition statue, available in both color and Web Exclusive faux bronze variants. Witness this infernal magnificence, emerging from the shadows of hell's limbo, beckoning with a siren's call that risks the forfeiture of one's soul! Social/Sharing |

Not much new to say that others haven't--just "wow." That linework is truly amazing. Spectacular example of John doing it all--wish there were more examples of him inking himself out there.

I was going to say that this is a superior piece from this period by Big John, but that wouldn't be fair as, upon reflection, I think it would hold up quite well compared to anything he did throughout his career.

Not only is this one phenomenal, but also a good reminder that the best inker for Buscema was John himself.

What a really lame piece with this third-row villain from that boring artist, you should definetly sell that page....! To me.

Beautiful and stunning don't even begin to describe this masterpiece. John Buscema truly was the Michaelangelo of comics. And, he really was his own best inker. Congrats on acquiring such a breathtaking piece!

Big John will continue to delight comic art fans for many generations to come. So glad this was featured by CAF to celebrate what would have been his 95th birthday.
Congratulaions of having this gem in your collection and thanks for choosing to share it with us all here!

The villain in repose always makes for compelling imagery. Buscema really knew how to show a relaxed baddy. So Good!
