From arguably the best of the ol' JLA-JSA crossovers is this page featuring Superman, Sandman, and Metamorpho rescuing the Shining Knight (and his valiant winged steed) lost in the time of Genghis Kahn.
Note the Sandman's evocative poem, pinned to the tunic of the defeated Mongol. As a kid I read this story in a digest-sized reprint. Years later, in college, when writing an essay on E.T.A. Hoffman's gothic story The Sand-Man, I made sure to use Wesley Dodds' verse here as an epigram to the assignment. (The teaching assistant grading the paper appreciated the citation; must've been a fan!)
