Rick Griffin was one of the Zap Comix greats who changed comix and rock and roll art. His logos and designs were seen on rock posters from The Grateful Dead to Jimi Hendrix, especially his well known 'flying eyeball' motif created for Hendrix's concert appearances in 1968. I was fortunate to pick up this 18 x 24" ink on heavy paper logo that he created for Robert Beerbohm's gallery. Griffin died tragically in an accident and his art is rare.

I own one of the many preliminaries for this piece-the most finished one I could find-because its such a super cool image and also the whole idea of it hits a sweet spot for me since I love comic art and rock art! Of course one of the most amazing things about Griffin's work was his typography which revolutionized lettering of the era and with the trademark flying eyeball this one hits all the buttons. Griffin was a rare talent and his early demise was a huge loss.

Thanks Benno, I couldn't agree more. The juncture of comics and rock are a sweet spot for me to, especially the Grateful Dead who I love, and Griffin was an important player to both the Dead and comix in general. His typography revolutionized poster iconography. This photo does poor justice to this piece- the paper is thick and absorbent and the plentiful ink lays on top, you can feel the ink its so heavy. He died too young and his death was a huge loss, indeed.
