I've been wanting to add a Jerry Ordway page to my collection for a long time. Obviously, if I had my choice, it would've been a board from All-Star Squadron or Infinity Inc., the classic Earth-2 titles on which Ordway established himself in the industry, but pages from those books tend to go for prices that are slightly out of my budget-driven reach. But when I spied this board - from a team-up title, no less - for an affordable price, I had to have it.

While the team-up stars touted on the cover of this issue are Superman and his evil Earth-3 counterpart Ultraman, this page also features the Challengers of the Unknown and a cosmic-level villain hurling a Green Lantern power battery into the sun TO DENY THE SUPER-GUYS THEIR POWERS. There's so much madness, camp and coolness going on here (courtesy writer Mark Waid), I absolutely love it.

Ordway's wide-eyed style is on display here, as is his seeming ease with a diverse array of characters. Some striking elements here include the painted black space-scape inker Bob Wiacek uses for the lower half-splash and the interesting use of whiteout. There's a thin white streak along Ultraman's cape in the final panel, and oddly enough, under the eyes of June Robbins (of the Challengers). Apparently, there was a decision to make her look older that was later reconsidered.

I like that I can see some leftover pencil lines in Panel 3 as well. And the swirling solar flares on the sun on the final panel look really sharp as well.
