Description

I thought I'd post the one illustration we own by John Fleming Gould, one of the great interior artists for the pulps, which I acquired in a trade at the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention in 2015. Gould is probably best remembered for the interiors he did for The Spider, Operator #5 and G-8 and His Battle Aces, but he began his pulp career back in 1927. One of his early markets was the Clayton pulp chain, and this interior was done for Victor Rousseau's "Pawns of Empire", which appeared in the April 1928 issue of Clayton's The Danger Trail. However, while several Gould illos illustrate this story in the pulp, this one was not used. Instead, a much smaller illo depicting this swordfight was used, which just focuses on the two swordsmen. I don't know why it wasn't used; perhaps the editor thought the original piece had too much else going on, or was just too large for the space they had available. Regardless, we're happy to have it!

That's a fantastic illustration- I love the depth of it- it does EXACTLY whatay great illo should- it makes me want to read the story! Great pickup!
