Description

After getting out of the service in 1948, Russ enrolled in an art correspondence course using the GI Bill. This ink and watercolour still life was the first assignment that he sent in using a knife that he had bought while stationed at Keesler Army Airfield in Biloxi, Mississippi. Russ only completed a couple of assignments before his time was monopolized by commuting from New Jersey to a Manhattan advertising agency and, later in the year, to Timely/Marvel's Empire State Building office. Amazingly, Russ still had the knife in his final years as shown in the attached photo.
