Yesterday I posted our last art purchase of 2016, and today I'll post our first art purchase of 2017. We bought this on New Year's Day and it arrived earlier today.

Aiden Lassell Ripley didn't do much illustration work -- his pulp career seems to be limited to around two dozen covers between 1922 and 1927, done for either Adventure (around 20 covers) or its sister magazine, Everybody's (four covers). I've always liked his work on those, and since he became well known for his later art depicting wildlife and sporting scenes, and is collectible within that genre, I've hoped that some of his illustration art might have survived. This is the first original pulp cover of his that I've seen surface; hopefully more are still out there.

Dated 1923 in the lower left, this was used as the cover for the October 20, 1924 issue of Adventure. At that time, Adventure generally ran covers that were not tied to a particular story inside. Most of his pulp covers had nautical themes.

Upon his return from WWI, Ripley enrolled at the School of the Boston Museum of Art, where he studied under Philip Leslie Hale and Frank Weston Benson, both of who were members of the Tarbellites (referring to Edmund Tarbell). This cover was painted near the end of his time there; in 1924 he was awarded a traveling fellowship and spent the next two years in Europe and North Africa.
