Description

And this is how Terry entered the war. Quietly, not with a bang, but with a scene in a library. The war existed, and that was that. Rather than provide a generic Christmas speech of simply good will toward men, the last frame of the panel becomes that much more poignant. From then on, Caniff did a hard turn directly into the war.

Note the additional image. This strip was accepted by the syndicate on December 9th. Now remember, knowing that there was no FedEx overnight service in those days, it is likely that this was one of the strips he did immediately after learning of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He couldn’t change the entire storyline too quickly, but he had to shift the tone.

Out of all the Terry strips you posted, this is by far my favorite.... Just a beautiful and powerful message. As a kid, my father took me to comic book shops and bookstores all the time. During one of those trips I came across a copy of Great Comics: Syndicated by the Daily News - Chicago Tribune." It was this book that introduced me to "Terry and the Pirates." Your examples bring back fond memories of reading this very special strip. Caniff's masterfully balanced narrative was whimsical at times and grim at others. Thank you so much for sharing an important piece of comic history, my friend.
