Description
Though not well remembered today, artist John Forte contributed a number of illustrations to the science fiction pulps in the early 1940's, primarily for the Columbia chain. As an art student in the mid-1930's, he struck up a lifelong friendship with fellow art student David A. Kyle, who he would later room with. Following his discharge after WWII, he branched out into other pulp genres and moved into the comics field as well, joining the Iger Studio. He also worked for DC, Timely and Atlas, among other comic book publishers. Fantasy fans probably best remember him for creating the cover to Robert E. Howard's "Conan the Conqueror," published by Kyle's Gnome Press.

This illustration is from the August 1942 issue of Future Combined With Science Fiction, illustrating "Ajax of Ajax" by Martin Pearson. Since he entered the military in October 1942, it's likely one of the last illos he did before his career went on hold during WWII.
