DescriptionI have been to SDCC once and it's probably the only time that I will go. Why? Because tickets are hard to get, hotel rooms are harder to get, and it conflicts with our annual trip to the Guadalupe River in Central Texas. I'll put a picture in the comments so you can understand a bit better the importance of that last point. Also, that trip is Kathy's favorite thing in the world. All that said, it does seem to me, a comic book collector in good standing for 54 years, that a pilgrimage to SDCC should be taken at least once in my lifetime so I kept my eyes open for an easy way to go. One day, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) put a Kickstarter for a collection of essays/biographies on women in comics (She Changed Comics - see comments for a link). I knew I would support it since I like CBLDF and I like books about comic book history. As I scrolled the list of perks, one stood out. There were two tickets to SDCC! All four days and the preview night were included plus a couple of other perks, but it was for 2016 and we'd already booked the river stay. Hmmm.... I discussed it with my bride and she said what about 2017, I could move the river trip a week and we could do both. This folks was a big deal! I wrote to the CBLDF and asked if they could switch to 2017 and that if they could and would that I'd grab those two perks. They had to contact the con since the passes were donated by the con. The con agreed and I bought the perk. My friend Thomas Zahler gave us a room. United Airlines donated the airfare because they love me (or because I travel too much - who knows?) and we were set. I didn't buy any art at the show (I don't count Odin and Maleficent by Walter Simonson since they came through a separate IDW event held during the show) except for this one piece. It's small, but just lovely. It stood out as a gem when we looked at the pieces available at the CBLDF auction. There were a couple of really great options (a Bone drawn by Jeff Smith at the auction, a giant Frank Miller piece, and a number of others), but this is the one that Kathy and I wanted. We had it for about $500 until Charles Brownstein got some jokers in the back decided to make me work a little. :) In case you don't know, Jill Thompson won three Eisners at SDCC 2017 (see Additional Images) and two were for her graphic novel Wonder Woman: The True Amazon (see Additional Images).
